About the Project

The Farm-to-Fork Strategy of the European Green Deal acknowledges the potential of algae to become an important source of alternative low-carbon footprint protein and contribute to improve the sustainability and competitiveness of the aquaculture sector. Nonetheless, the European algae industry is still at an early phase lagging behind the overall increase seen at a global level, mostly driven by Asia. Within this context, the EU project INNOAQUA aims to pave the path towards the upcoming sustainable and diversified EU in-land aquaculture industry by demonstrating and mainstreaming innovative algae-based foods and solutions, based on ecology, circularity and digitalization concepts.

Applied Photonics

From fundamental science to real-world innovation: at our Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP), we explore optical phenomena as a unique toolbox for innovation in micro- and nanofabrication, optical, physical, and biochemical sensors, and platforms for analogue simulation and quantum computing. Our researchers focus on developing systems capable of operating in contexts where precise and reliable sensing is essential (industry, environment or biomedicine), as well as nonlinear optical devices for building quantum analogue simulations and computing platforms. Our advances in photonic sensing enable their use in extreme environments, e.g., outer space or deep sea. Based on a non-siloed organisation, the solutions we develop through the study of light and photons require multidisciplinarity and close, cooperative work across our various research domains. With our expertise in photonics and electronic systems integration, we explore the potential for technology transfer to the emerging national and international photonics industry.

Enterprise Systems Engineering

The research carried out at the Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering (CESE) has a direct impact on industrial transformation, developing sustainable, resilient, and human-centred solutions to address the challenges of the digital and green transitions. Through a co-creation and development approach with scientific and industrial partners, CESE contributes to improve organisational capabilities and driving systemic innovation in complex industrial contexts. As a multidisciplinary research centre, CESE bridges science and practice in the field of Systems Engineering, focusing on value creation within industrial ecosystems. This mission is structured around five research lines that define CESE scientific and technological expertise: Manufacturing Systems Design and Management, Supply Chain and Collaborative Networks Management, Architectures and Industrial Information Systems, Technology Management in Industry, Transportation and Logistics.
